Burgundy, Big Bottles and Sauvignon Blanc

From Burgundy to the Barossa

When I was learning my winemaking craft I pestered those winemakers whose wines I loved and coveted the most. In 2007 I worked “les vendanges” as intern for the celebrated Domaine Méo-Camuzet in Vosne-Romanée, and recently received a humbling invitation to return as their guest.

The historic Château du Clos de Vougeot

The occasion was the 60th anniversary of the domaine, a sumptuous dinner in the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot (formerly owned by Etienne Camuzet and now the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin), and the opportunity to showcase my wines pre-dinner to their 300 guests! It was a lovely, nostalgic evening and great to catch up with the Méo-Camuzet team after an absence of 12 years. Thank you Jean-Nicolas and Nathalie.

Fancy a magnum?

We’re a fair-go kinda business. We like to give young players a running start. Our Young Ambassadors program is an opportunity for quality recruits (friends’ grandchildren are a convenient talent pool) to gain work experience at the hands of a highly principled mentor.

Here we see Finn in mid sales pitch on the occasion of his first birthday. Whilst perhaps a little over-exuberant we greatly admire his enthusiasm. We’ll be looking for some real initiative when he tackles the Responsible Service of Alcohol module. We’ll also be looking for some infant size steel cap boots when vintage gets cranking.

With only 40 magnums of each single vineyard Shiraz produced, these 1.5L gems are as delicious as they are rare. Bottled, labelled, wax-sealed by hand and presented in locally made wooden boxes, they make perfect gifts whatever the season. Twice the size and twice the ageing potential... if you can keep your hands off them. $135 per boxed magnum.

The SB's knees

Nick Butler of The Real Review recently rated our 2018 Sauvignon Blanc 96/100 hitting the top spot and this is now ranked #1 2018 Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide Hills. Cheers indeed!

2018 Michael Hall Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc, Piccadilly $38.00

"More yellow than straw in colour - shows weight. The bouquet is complex - roasted nuts, sulfides and dried herbs. There's a rare deliciousness to this wine, a seriousness and confidence that demands attention. Inspired by the great wines of Dagueneau"

In the cellar

As the year draws to a close we have just enough time for one more bottling run before Christmas with Sauvignon Blanc, Roussanne and the Blanc going down the line. These three 2019 whites are made in tiny volumes with super quality to match. We’re particularly excited by our project wine the Blanc, taking another sure-footed step through the volatile arena of orange wines. Unlike some this is clean, pure and authentic! To be released in 2020.

Over the festive season Phillip and I will be opening the tasting room every Friday and Saturday from 11am to 5pm so come on down. BYO mince pies!

Have a safe Christmas, see you in the tasting room,
Michael
